The Trust awards grants to under 21-year-olds with either a physical
or learning disability or who are in a situation of deprivation. The
grants have to be for educational purposes and are awarded both
to individuals and to groups and organisations working with eligible
young people. Grants are awarded primarily to individuals
and groups in the Lothians but can also be awarded elsewhere in
Scotland. The grants committee meets approximately six times a year
and has an annual budget of approximately £150,000 to disburse
in grants ranging from £30 to £2,000.
Over the last few years grants have been awarded for dyslexia tuition,
school trips, bus passes, books and equipment, college expenses,
drama, dance and music tuition, special equipment, costs to attend
the Special Olympics and computers (where there is a special educational
need). The Trust also awards a few grants each year towards
boarding school fees; however, these are exceptional cases and where
personal circumstances make a boarding option beneficial. No day
school fees are funded.
