The John Watson's Trust originated in 1762 when John Watson, an Edinburgh solicitor and Writer to the Signet, left the residue of his estate for charitable purposes for children in the Edinburgh area.  A refuge or hostel was established which eventually became the John Watson's School.  The school was closed in 1975 and the buildings were purchased to house the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

In 1984 the Trust was amended by Act of Parliament to disburse the funds arising from the sale and this site is intended to inform you of the work of the Trust and how to apply for a grant.
